Tang Teaching Museum Whitman: Join us Saturday, June 21, at 2 pm, for Family Saturday: Tape Abstraction. Participants will create their own tape relief paintings inspired by Robert Reed鈥檚 Plum Nellie, One, One, One, exhibited in Up to Us: Black Dimensions in Art 1975-Tomorrow. After viewing and discussing the artwork, participants are invited to create their own paintings using acrylic paint and tape on canvas.Family Saturday programs foster multigenerational creative cooperation through looking at artwork, discussing it, and engaging in a hands-on art-making activity. Programs run from 2-3:30 pm and include a tour of selected works. All programs are free and open to the public, and suitable for children age 5 and older, accompanied by their adult companions. No registration required; supplies provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tang Teaching Museum Tang Teaching Museum: Join us Saturday, June 21, at 4:45, or at 5:30 pm, for a tour of Up to Us: Black Dimensions in Art, 1975鈥揟omorrow, with BDA board members Jacqueline Lake-Sample and Stephen Tyson.The exhibition honors the 50-year history of Black Dimensions in Art, Inc. (BDA), the Capital Region鈥檚 longest-running Black arts collective. Since its founding in 1975 in Schenectady, New York, BDA has promoted the art of the African diaspora through exhibitions, workshops, and other programs in the Capital Region and beyond. Up to Us is a collaboration among BDA, the Tang, and the John B. Moore Documentary Collaborative at 爱污传媒 College (MDOCS).At 6:30 pm, following the tours, head over to the Schick Art Gallery on the second floor of the Saisselin Art Building for a joint reception for BDA and the MDOCS 2025 Storytellers鈥 Institute Fellows鈥 Pop-Up Show.

Upbeat on the Roof with Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra

Tang Park Barbecue Pit: Join us Thursday, July 10, at 6 pm, for a performance of Afro-Caribbean tunes on the Tang lawn by Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra.Formed in October 1980 in Amsterdam, New York, this 12-piece orchestra is led by Bronx-native Alex Torres. Known for their original blends of Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Cha-cha, Bomba, Plena, and Latin Jazz, Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra bring the sounds of the Caribbean to the Capital Region. The Orchestra has received numerous awards, including the New England Cultural Arts Preservation Award, the New York State Music Achievement Award, the Schenectady League of Arts Award, the Governor鈥檚 Excellence in Arts Award, the NAACP Albany Chapter Award, and three NY Capital District Original Music Awards. The group is also registered with the Arts-in-Education program of New York State, bringing the orchestra into New York schools. The group鈥檚 music has been used in numerous commercials, TV shows, and films, including Ugly Betty, Blacklist, and Shameless, among others.Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra have performed at the Tang鈥檚 Upbeat on the Roof in 2015, 2017, and 2023. The 2025 Upbeat on the Roof concert series celebrates the Tang鈥檚 25th anniversary year with some of our favorite acts from previous Upbeat seasons.Concerts take place on the lawn outside the Tang (we outgrew the roof!) every Thursday evening from July 10 through August 21 at 6 pm, and are free and open to the public. Visitors are invited to bring blankets, camping chairs, and their own food and drink!Crafts on the GrassTang Art Educators offer crafts for kids at every concert, starting at 5:30! A different craft will be available each week. All projects are suitable for children aged 5 and up, with adult supervision recommended. Materials will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upbeat on the Roof: Joan Kelsey

Tang Park Volleyball Court: Join us Thursday, July 17, at 6 pm, for a performance by indie singer-songwriter Joan Kelsey on the Tang lawn.Joan Kelsey is a New York City-based artist known for their folksy melodies and rich storytelling. Their songwriting practice began as an effort to marry their interests in poetry and composition, resulting in a lyrically and sonically complex body of work. Kelsey鈥檚 songs discuss God, loss, failure, friendship, and refracted memories.Joan Kelsey also performed at Upbeat on the Roof in 2019.The 2025 Upbeat on the Roof concert series celebrates the Tang鈥檚 25th anniversary year with some of our favorite acts from previous Upbeat seasons.Concerts take place on the lawn outside the Tang (we outgrew the roof!) every Thursday evening from July 10 through August 21 at 6 pm, and are free and open to the public. In her memory, the Tang family made a substantial donation that led to the museum becoming a reality, opening in 2000. Frances Day honors Frances Young Tang鈥檚 legacy of creativity and philanthropy with a day of free activities.

Upbeat on the Roof: The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Band

Tang Park Volleyball Court: Join us Thursday, July 24, at 6 pm, on the Tang lawn for a six-piece, Southern-style performance from The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Band.The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Band was originally founded in Albany, New York, by the late Deacon James Edmonds out of the Sweet Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in 1965. The Band performs in the storied tradition of Southern-style gospel music with spirituals, hymns, traditional contemporary gospel, and originals. Songs include well-known traditional works (Precious Lord, Take My Hand, for example); covers of songs that crossed over into pop music (such as the Staple Singers鈥 I鈥檒l Take You There); and contemporary quartet-style songs that are gospel standards in the church community.The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Band performed at Upbeat on the Roof in 2016, 2021, and 2022.The 2025 Upbeat on the Roof concert series celebrates the Tang鈥檚 25th anniversary year with some of our favorite acts from previous Upbeat seasons.Concerts take place on the lawn outside the Tang (we outgrew the roof!) every Thursday evening from July 10 through August 21 at 6 pm, and are free and open to the public. Tang Park Volleyball Court: Join us Thursday, August 7, at 6 pm for a performance of acoustic blues and vintage jazz on the Tang lawn by Annie and the Hedonists.Annie and the Hedonists interpret the sounds of the great female blues artists of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, such as Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, and Billie Holiday, among many others. Featuring musicians Annie Rosen, Jonny Rosen, Peter Davis, Don Young, and Jerry Marotta, Annie and the Hedonists cover an eclectic mix of blues, jazz, swing, and folk roots Americana. Recent projects include a 2024 cover album in collaboration with the legendary Saratoga folk coffeehouse Caff猫 Lena. Having been featured on top Spotify playlists (New Music Friday), and charts (#2 on US Viral Charts), in national commercials, and on top blogs like the Huffington Post. She has received 7 Thomas Edison Music Awards, twice receiving Songwriter of the Year and Solo Act of the Year.
